Green thumb runs in the family

August 15, 2017

Riverside Gardens Garden Centre owner, Larry Smith

34 years ago, Larry Smith's father decided to make the move to Shepparton and buy a nursery to pursue his passion for horticulture.

Riverside Gardens garden centre was originally located closer to town on the Goulburn Valley Highway.

They stayed there for twelve years before moving to the current location which was originally a cow paddock.

The family business has continued to grow and was awarded best medium sized garden centre three years in a row.

Riverside Gardens is well-known for their general gardening needs, gift lines, seedlings and roses.

"Our staff are very knowledgable, we know everything about soil and what will grow best for you."

There is also a mini golf course on site, which attracts many families in the warmer months.

"The idea for mini golf was to show off some garden displays and the variety of plants we offered."

Other attractions are the nursery's pets, Banksia and Charlie, who love the company of visitors.

Banksia is a 17-year-old cat, who spends her life wondering the garden centre and sleeping amongst the plants and gifts.

"She sleeps here over night too. She's only set off the alarm a couple of times thankfully."

Charlie is their pet Cockatoo, who is over 40-year-old. He loves having a chat and responding to his name.

As the spring season rolls in, Mr Smith let us know now is the time to pick up everything you need to get your garden in top shape!

Riverside Gardens Garden Centre is located at 7715 Goulburn Valley Hwy, Kialla VIC 3631.
