A passion for books has led Brian Dougan back to doing what he loves.
The owner of Lookabook in Shepparton has been in the bookstore business for more than ten years.
Having previously owned another bookstore in town, he acquired the building at 116 Fryers St, Shepparton ten years ago and has been there ever since.
Before being home to Lookabook, the building housed a number of different businesses over the years, including a gift shop and bridal store.
“I was in a highly physical job prior to this and was looking to do something I was good at and that was easier on the body,” Brian said.
“I have a love for books, they’re something I know a lot about.”
Brian and his wife Marie love supplying the Goulburn Valley with an extensive variety of second hand books.
Despite the growing popularity of e-books, Brian believes there is nothing better than holding a paperback book in your hands.
“A lot of my regulars have brought kindles and after keeping them for six months have given them away and come back again.”
Brian selects each book he sells himself, purchasing them from book fairs and local suppliers in the Goulburn Valley.
“I only sell good quality books,” Brian said.
“I do a lot of mileage in the car to track down what is in demand.”
Being born in the Goulburn Valley, both Brian and Marie believe the shop is in a great location in town, particularly with the new eateries that have opened up down the street.
You can pop in to Lookabook and visit Brian and Marie from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday.
