Baking a family tradition

November 08, 2017

What originally started as a small family business has grown into a solid foundation in the heart of Mooroopna.

The Honig family opened the Mooroopna Bakery 13 years ago, and have been situated at 124 McLennan St ever since.

However, a recent expansion has seen the humble bakery now operating from two prime locations in town.

Trevor Honig has been helping out in the family bakery since day one, and was pleased to see their latest business venture come to fruition 15 months ago.

Trevor is now situated full time at the Mooroopna Pie Shop Bakery, the second location for the store.

“10 years ago there were plans to build a supermarket in the store we were located in, so we purchased the building down the road,” Trevor said.

Plans for the supermarket never went ahead, and so nine years later the Honig family decided to utilise their second premises.

“When the opportunity came up we thought we would give it a go and see if it works.”

The new store has achieved huge success so far, with Trevor attributing this to the availability of more car parking and the “quicker and easier service”.

“We are trying to bring back good customer service, good products and good value.”

The Mooroopna Pie Shop Bakery offers a variety of pies, cakes, sandwiches, sausage rolls and other bakery items.

The bakery has won a number of awards over the years, including the Best Pie in Australia in 2012 for their plain meat pie.

Trevor and his family are grateful for the support they have received from the community, and so they strive to always do something to give back to their town

“We try and do as much as we can for others, including Aus Kick, the Royal Children’s Hospital, local schools and sporting clubs.”

The Bakery is also planning to run their hot cross bun fundraiser again for the Good Friday Appeal, which they established this year.

After raising $6000 in 2017, the bakery is hoping to go bigger and better in 2018.

“The hot cross buns were a huge success and something we really enjoyed doing.”

“Everyone in the business gets involved and we’re hoping to play with flavours and new ideas.”

When asked of any future plans in the works, Trevor said he and his family hope to keep doing what they’ve been doing for the past 13 years.

“We hope to keep going bigger and better.”

The Mooropna Pie Shop Bakery is open 7am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday, while the Mooroopna Bakery is open seven days from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 2.30pm Saturday and 8am to 2.30pm on Sunday.

The Mooroopna Pie Shop Bakery is located at 48 McLennan St, Mooroopna.
