Harnessing goodwill to raise funds for McGrath Foundation

Cobram Harness Racing Club has secured a Holden Barina, boosting its campaign to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.

For the past six years, the Cobram Harness Racing Club drivers have donned pink pants in support of the McGrath Foundation.

Initially, the female drivers donated their fees, before ramping up their efforts with prizes and raffles at their Community Pink Ladies Day at the Trots event.

Last year, the event raised $20 000 towards breast cancer support and awareness, with the club deciding to raffle off a buggy.

‘‘We’re a little insane and decided to go even bigger this year,’’ Cobram Harness Racing Club driver Juanita Breen said.

Shepparton’s Thompson Holden has donated a new Holden Barina.

‘‘We wanted something with a bit more generic appeal as we want to raise double last year’s efforts,’’ Ms Breen said.

With a goal of raising $40 000, Ms Breen is looking forward to the event on Sunday, June 3.

The club is also thankful for the financial support of Benstud Standardbreds, Yabby Dam Racing, Hygain, Hyland Sportswear and Harness Weekly.

The women are also delighted to raise awareness throughout the month of May, wearing pink pants in every race, rather than only on Pink Ladies Day.

‘‘It’s been great that Racing Victoria has let us wear the pants and show our support,’’ Ms Breen said.

Raffle tickets cost $5 and can be bought at Thompson Holden, Saddleworld Shepparton or from women associated with the club.
